PSSI Plans Dual President’s Cup 2026 Format to Boost Grassroots and Elite Football

PSSI is preparing a fresh concept for the 2026 President’s Cup following a high-level discussion between its chairman Erick Thohir and steering committee head Maruarar Sirait. The meeting focused on reshaping the tournament into a more dynamic competition with broader reach and a distinct identity compared to previous editions.
The proposed format introduces a unique approach by splitting the event into two separate competitions. One will focus on grassroots representation, featuring teams emerging from regional tournaments, while the other is designed to showcase established clubs with strong historical reputations in Indonesian football. This dual structure is intended to balance development and prestige within the same overarching event.
In the first competition, participation will be extended to champions of regional tournaments such as regency, city, and provincial cups connected to Liga 4. This pathway is seen as a major opportunity for local clubs to step onto a national stage, offering them exposure and a higher level of competition that has often been difficult to access.
Alongside this, a special “Super Match” version of the President’s Cup will bring together prominent clubs with deep-rooted histories. The idea is to create high-profile matchups that appeal to fans while preserving the legacy and competitiveness of Indonesia’s top-tier football institutions.
Through these two formats, PSSI aims to increase playing opportunities for athletes across different levels. The initiative is also expected to strengthen the overall football ecosystem in Indonesia by making it more inclusive, competitive, and better prepared to compete on the Asian stage.
