Indonesia U17 Finalizes Squad for Asian Cup 2026 After Key Selections and Cuts
Indonesia's U17 national team has confirmed its final roster for the 2026 AFC U17 Asian Cup, with head coach Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto making several notable decisions ahead of the tournament. Six players were removed from the broader squad as the coaching staff narrowed the team to meet competition regulations. Among the biggest surprises was the omission of striker Mierza Fijratullah, a player who had been considered one of the attacking options during preparations.
The coaching staff explained that the decision regarding Mierza was primarily based on medical concerns. A hamstring injury ruled him out of contention, as the recovery process would take longer than the team could afford before the tournament begins. His absence drew attention because of his role in the attacking setup, but the staff prioritized player fitness and overall squad balance.
In addition to Mierza, five other players were released after technical evaluations determined they did not fit the final requirements of the team. Those players were Syahdan Caesar, Handri Dimas, Shoyyo Himawan, Alfa Al Faruqi Rangkayo, and I Komang Semadi. These decisions reflect the coaching staff's effort to shape a competitive and cohesive group capable of delivering strong performances on the continental stage.
Indonesia's squad has now been finalized at 23 players, in line with tournament regulations. However, only 21 players departed from Jakarta, as two overseas-based players are expected to join the team directly at the tournament venue. Their arrival is anticipated to strengthen the squad and add tactical variety as Indonesia prepares for the challenges ahead.
Following disappointment at the ASEAN U17 competition, the young Garuda squad has shifted its full attention toward the AFC U17 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, which will take place from May 5 to May 22. The team enters the tournament with renewed focus, aiming to prove its progress against Asia's best youth sides. With preparations intensifying, expectations are growing for Indonesia's next generation of football talent.
