FIFA Silences the Secrets: Red Cards for Mouth-Covering at World Cup 2026.

In a move to purge "hidden abuse" from the beautiful game, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) has approved a revolutionary—and controversial—rule change for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. Starting this June, players who cover their mouths during confrontations with opponents or officials will be subject to an automatic red card.
The decision, finalized during a special meeting in Vancouver, follows a string of high-profile incidents where players were accused of using discriminatory or racist language while shielding their lips from cameras and lip-readers. Most notably, the rule serves as a direct response to the recent clash between Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior and Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni, where allegations of abuse were difficult to verify because the speaker’s mouth was obscured.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino hailed the amendment as a necessary step for transparency. "We must ensure there are no shadows on the pitch where hate can hide," Infantino stated. Referees will now have the discretion to dismiss any player who uses their jersey, hand, or equipment to conceal their words during a heated exchange. While the rule is not yet mandatory for domestic leagues, it will be strictly enforced across all 48 teams in North America this summer. Critics argue the "presumption of guilt" could lead to unfair dismissals, but for FIFA, the message is clear: if you have nothing to hide, don't cover your mouth.
