Georginio Wijnaldum Enters Free Agency After Al-Ettifaq Exit
Former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is set to become a free agent after Al-Ettifaq confirmed the termination of his contract. The decision brings an end to his two-year spell in Saudi Arabia and opens the door for a new chapter in the experienced Dutch international's career.
Wijnaldum joined Al-Ettifaq in 2023 as one of the club's marquee signings and quickly established himself as a key figure within the squad. His experience, leadership, and quality in midfield made him one of the team's most influential players during his time in the Saudi Pro League.
Despite the club's decision to part ways with him, Wijnaldum enjoyed an impressive campaign. He regularly featured as one of the leaders on the pitch, occasionally wearing the captain's armband while playing a crucial role in linking midfield and attack throughout the season.
The 35-year-old delivered outstanding numbers for a central midfielder, finishing the league season with 16 goals and seven assists in 33 appearances. His contributions helped Al-Ettifaq secure a seventh-place finish and highlighted his ability to remain effective at a high level despite advancing age.
With his departure now confirmed, attention has shifted to his next destination. While no official decision has been announced, reports suggest a possible return to English football. Newly promoted Coventry City has emerged as one of the clubs reportedly interested in securing the services of the former Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain star ahead of the 2026/27 season.
