Barcelona's Camp Nou Renovation Faces Financial Roadblock as Funding Gap Emerges
FC Barcelona is currently confronting a major financial challenge in completing its ambitious Espai Barça redevelopment project. The club's large-scale plan, which includes the transformation of Camp Nou and surrounding facilities, is now under pressure as existing funding is expected to fall short before construction is fully completed.
The project has been financed in part through a €1.45 billion loan from Goldman Sachs, but internal assessments indicate that this budget will not be sufficient to cover the remaining phases. As a result, the club's leadership under Joan Laporta is preparing to seek approval from members to expand its credit limit in order to secure additional funding.
One of the possible moments for this request is the extraordinary general meeting scheduled for July, where new governance decisions are also expected to be made. However, the club is also considering postponing the decision to the regular general assembly at the start of the next season, although the urgency of the situation may force an earlier move.
The redevelopment work at the iconic Spotify Camp Nou remains ongoing, with several key components of the Espai Barça project still unfinished. These include not only the stadium itself but also related infrastructure such as Palau Blaugrana and surrounding urban development in the Les Corts area.
The stadium has already progressed through phase 1C, increasing capacity to 62,657 seats, with current work focused on premium seating and the upper tiers. The ongoing phase is expected to continue until the summer of 2027, followed by the final stage involving major structural additions, including a compression ring and roof installation, which may require the team to temporarily relocate during the 2027–28 season.
