In the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup, Mexico faced Ecuador. Julián Quiñones delivered a goal and an assist, Raúl Jiménez found the net, and Alvarado provided an assist. In stoppage time, Piero Hincapié was sent off after covering his mouth and receiving a red card. Mexico ultimately defeated Ecuador 2–0 to advance to the Round of 16.
