Mexico Appoint Rafael Márquez as Head Coach Through 2030 World Cup

Mexico have officially named Rafael Márquez as the new head coach of the national team, replacing Javier Aguirre after the 2026 World Cup. The former captain will lead El Tri through the 2030 World Cup as part of the federation's long-term development plan.

The Mexican Football Federation described the appointment as a key step in maintaining continuity within the national team project. The organization believes Márquez is the right figure to guide the squad's progress while preparing the team for future international competitions.

Before taking charge, Márquez served as Aguirre's assistant since August 2024 and gained valuable experience with the senior national team. His promotion follows Mexico's Round of 16 exit at the 2026 World Cup, where they were eliminated by England.

Márquez brings an outstanding football background to the role after enjoying one of the most successful playing careers in Mexican history. He represented his country at five FIFA World Cups and won multiple major international titles, while also collecting domestic and European trophies during his time at Barcelona.

His coaching career began at youth level before he took charge of Barcelona Atlètic, where he built an encouraging record over two seasons. That experience, combined with his leadership and understanding of the national team, gives Mexico confidence as it begins a new era under one of its greatest football icons.
