Dutch football clubs are set to face stricter financial obligations after the Eredivisie raised the minimum salary requirement for players from outside the European Union. The updated rule increases the annual minimum wage for non-EU players to €630,000, creating a significant challenge for clubs with limited budgets.

The regulation is based on Dutch labor and immigration policies, which require employers to provide strong justification for hiring workers from outside the European Economic Area. In professional football, this includes paying foreign players substantially more than the league’s average salary, making non-EU signings a major financial commitment.

The salary threshold has steadily increased over the years, reflecting the rising value of player contracts across Dutch football. After standing at €608,000 last season, the minimum has reached a new record, further increasing the cost of retaining or signing non-EU talent.

A different standard applies to younger players aged 18, 19, and, beginning in 2025, 20. They are only required to earn 75 percent of the regular minimum salary, giving clubs greater flexibility to recruit and develop promising young players from outside Europe.

The new regulation could have serious implications for several Indonesian national team players competing in the Netherlands, many of whom represent mid-table or smaller clubs. If teams struggle to meet the higher wage requirement, some may reconsider keeping non-EU players, potentially affecting the future of Indonesia’s overseas talent in Dutch football.
