Diego Forlan Set to Lead Uruguay After World Cup Disappointment
Uruguay are preparing to appoint national team legend Diego Forlan as their new head coach following the departure of Marcelo Bielsa. The coaching change comes after Uruguay's disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the team failed to advance beyond the group stage.
Bielsa stepped down shortly after Uruguay's elimination, ending a three-year spell in charge that began in 2023. His tenure concluded following a narrow defeat to Spain in the final group-stage match, a result that sealed the nation's early exit from the tournament.
Reports indicate that Forlan will initially take charge on an interim basis until March next year while also overseeing Uruguay's Under-20 squad at the upcoming South American Championship. During this period, he will guide the senior team through several international fixtures before a long-term decision is made.
As one of Uruguay's greatest footballers, Forlan enjoyed an outstanding international career, scoring 36 goals in 112 appearances between 2002 and 2014. He represented his country in three World Cups and played a key role in winning the 2011 Copa America, making him one of the nation's most respected football figures.
Since retiring from professional football in 2019, the former striker has gained coaching experience with Peñarol and Atenas in Uruguay. Beyond football, he also explored professional tennis by competing in an ATP Challenger event in 2024, adding another unique chapter to his sporting career before returning to the national team in a managerial role.
