Sassuolo and Venezia Battle to Sign Free Agent Takehiro Tomiyasu
Takehiro Tomiyasu could be set for a return to Serie A after becoming a free agent following the end of his contract with Ajax. The Japanese defender is reportedly in advanced discussions with both Sassuolo and newly promoted Venezia as he considers his next destination.
At 27 years old, Tomiyasu remains one of the most experienced and versatile defenders available on the market. Capable of playing both as a center-back and a full-back, he has built an impressive career across Europe with spells at Bologna, Arsenal, and Ajax.
The Japan international previously enjoyed a successful period in Italy with Bologna between 2019 and 2021. His consistent performances in Serie A earned him a move to Arsenal, where he continued his development before later joining Ajax.
Tomiyasu's career was temporarily disrupted by a serious knee injury that kept him out of action for more than a year. He has since recovered and returned to competitive football, representing Japan at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and proving his fitness on the international stage.
Venezia have identified Tomiyasu as a priority target after defender Marin Sverko suffered a long-term injury, while Sassuolo are also eager to secure his signature. With negotiations continuing, the race to sign the experienced defender is expected to remain one of the more intriguing stories in the Serie A transfer market.
