Serie A Introduces Major VAR and Refereeing Rule Changes for 2026/27 Season

Serie A will implement a series of new officiating regulations for the 2026/27 campaign after the Italian Referees Association adopted the latest recommendations from the International Football Association Board (IFAB). The updated guidelines are designed to improve decision-making, reduce interruptions, and increase the overall flow of matches.
One of the most significant changes expands the authority of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Officials will now be able to intervene in additional situations that could directly influence the outcome of a game, including incorrect second yellow cards, mistaken player identity, and certain corner-kick decisions when the review can be completed without disrupting play.
To address excessive time-wasting, substituted players will be required to leave the field within 10 seconds after their number is displayed. Failure to comply could delay the next substitution until the ball goes out of play, encouraging quicker transitions and reducing unnecessary stoppages.
The new regulations also introduce a five-second limit for taking throw-ins and goal kicks. Teams that fail to restart play within the allotted time risk losing possession. Injury management procedures have also been updated, requiring treated players to remain off the field for at least one minute before returning, with limited exceptions for goalkeepers, serious head injuries, and incidents involving disciplinary action.
Additional rule changes give referees greater authority in player conduct, including the option to issue a straight red card for actions deemed unsporting during confrontations with opponents. New interpretations regarding penalty situations have also been included, as Serie A aims to align its officiating standards with the latest international football guidelines ahead of the new season.
