The Storylines

Arsenal begin the defence of their Premier League crown having already collected the first silverware of the season, beating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield thanks to goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard. It was a statement performance against a major domestic rival, and Artetas side will be keen to carry that momentum straight into the league opener.

Coventry City, meanwhile, return to the top flight after 25 years away, having romped to the Championship title under Frank Lampard by an 11-point margin over Ipswich Town, with the best attack (97 goals scored) and the best defence (45 conceded) in the division. There is unlikely to be a tougher way to mark the clubs top-flight return than a trip to the reigning champions on opening night.

Team News

Arsenal

Jurrien Timber (groin) and William Saliba (back) remain sidelined, though Timber could return to first-team training this week. New £75m signing Bruno Guimaraes impressed on his Community Shield debut before being withdrawn with ice strapped to his thigh, leaving a slight doubt over his involvement from the start. Christos Tzolis has made an electric start to life in north London, arriving on the back of a 15-game streak of goal involvements, while Bukayo Saka is expected to return to the starting XI after appearing from the bench against City.

Coventry City

Striker Haji Wright is a major absentee, with manager Frank Lampard confirming a serious quad injury that could keep him out for up to 12 weeks. Frank Onyeka and Jack Rudoni are also doubts. Coventry have strengthened significantly for the step up, adding goalkeeper Carl Rushworth (£22m from Brighton), winger Loum Tchaouna (£20m from Burnley), defender Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt, and midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi in a £23.1m deal, among others.
