FIFA Hands Argentina Heavy Punishments After World Cup Final Chaos
FIFA has imposed a series of significant sanctions on Argentina following the heated scenes that occurred after the 2026 World Cup final against Spain. The disciplinary action has placed several Argentina players and officials under the spotlight, with Leandro Paredes receiving the most severe punishment. The former Roma and Juventus midfielder has been suspended for 10 international matches and fined $90,000.
The final in New Jersey ended with Spain securing a narrow 1-0 victory, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring the only goal of the match. However, the post-match incidents quickly became a major talking point as tensions escalated between members of both teams. Paredes was identified as one of the main figures involved in the confrontation, resulting in FIFA handing him a lengthy suspension.
Nahuel Molina, who recently joined Roma after previously being part of Atletico Madrid, was also punished for his involvement. The defender has been banned for seven international matches and received a $90,000 fine. His suspension represents another major setback for Argentina, particularly as the national team prepares for its upcoming international fixtures.
Other members of the Argentina delegation also received disciplinary penalties. Thiago Almada and Pablo Martin Paez Gavira were each handed one-match suspensions along with $30,000 fines, while team official Roberto Ayala received a three-match ban and a $30,000 fine. The collection of sanctions highlights the seriousness with which FIFA viewed the incidents surrounding the final.
Argentina’s football federation has also been punished as a consequence of the post-match disorder. The team will have to play its next two home matches with stadium capacity restricted to 50 percent, in addition to facing a financial penalty from FIFA. The sanctions serve as a major warning for Argentina and underline the importance of maintaining discipline and controlling emotions, particularly during high-pressure international matches.
