Indonesia U-20 Face Australia Test With Asian Cup Qualification at Stake

Indonesia U-20 moved into a strong position in Group H of the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers after securing a convincing 3-0 victory over hosts Laos. The result lifted the Garuda Nusantara side to four points from two matches, putting them at the top of the group on goal difference ahead of Australia. The situation became even more favorable after Australia were held to a 2-2 draw by Malaysia in the other group fixture.

The decisive final group match will see Indonesia U-20 take on Australia on Sunday, September 6. A victory would guarantee Indonesia top spot in Group H and send them directly to the final tournament in China, with seven points from three matches. Regardless of the result between Malaysia and Laos, neither of the two teams would be able to overtake Indonesia if the young Garuda secure all three points against Australia.

A draw against Australia would still leave Indonesia with a strong chance of finishing first. In that situation, Indonesia would move to five points, while Australia would also have five. Malaysia would need to avoid victory against Laos for Indonesia to remain group leaders. If Malaysia were to win, Indonesia could still finish top provided Malaysia did not win by a margin large enough to overturn Indonesia's current goal-difference advantage.

The situation becomes more complicated if Indonesia suffer defeat against Australia. The loss would leave them with four points and rule out the possibility of winning the group. Their only route would then be to finish as runners-up, which would require Malaysia to draw or lose against Laos. A Malaysian victory would take them to five points and push Indonesia out of the top two, effectively ending their qualification hopes.

Even if Indonesia finish second after losing to Australia, qualification through the best runners-up ranking would remain difficult. Following the withdrawal of the Philippines, the AFC has adjusted the calculation for Groups B-H by excluding results against fourth-placed teams. As a result, Indonesia would only have one point from their relevant matches, earned against Malaysia. They would therefore need to keep the defeat to Australia as narrow as possible, preserve their goal difference, and hope that several other runners-up finish with weaker records.
