Indonesia U-20 Book Asian Cup 2027 Spot After Beating Australia
Indonesia U-20 secured their place in the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup after producing an impressive 2-0 victory over Australia U-20 in their final Group H qualifying match. Played at New Laos National Stadium in Vientiane on Sunday, September 6, 2026, the result saw Garuda Muda finish top of the group with seven points from three matches.
The victory also completed a strong recovery after Indonesia began their qualifying campaign with a goalless draw against Malaysia U-20. That result put additional pressure on the team to deliver in the following matches. They responded in convincing fashion by defeating hosts Laos U-20 3-0 before producing their most important performance against Australia to finish the group unbeaten.
Two goals secured Indonesia's place in the tournament. Theodore Leeming opened the scoring in the 28th minute before Amar Brkic added a second in stoppage time at 90+2. Beyond the result itself, Leeming's goal carried particular significance because the 18-year-old was born in Perth, Australia, and has Indonesian heritage through his mother, who comes from Malang, East Java.
Indonesia's latest qualification also continues their strong record of reaching the U-20 Asian Cup. Garuda Muda have regularly featured in the final tournament since 2018, when they reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Japan. The 2020 edition was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, while Indonesia returned to the competition in 2023 but were eliminated in the group stage after facing Uzbekistan and Iraq.
The 2025 tournament followed a similar pattern, with Indonesia again unable to progress beyond the group stage after competing against Uzbekistan and Iraq. The qualification for 2027 now gives the team another opportunity to improve on those recent campaigns. Finishing first in Group H without losing a match provides an encouraging foundation as Indonesia prepare for another challenge on the continental stage.
