Real Madrid Identify Porto Star Diogo Costa as Potential Courtois Successor

Real Madrid are beginning to prepare for a possible change in goal after identifying FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as one of their preferred options. Thibaut Courtois remains one of the most reliable goalkeepers in world football, but at 34 years old, his current contract situation has encouraged the Spanish giants to consider their long-term plans. Although Madrid remain keen to extend Courtois contract, they are also assessing potential replacements should the Belgian eventually leave the Santiago Bernabeu.

According to reports, Costa has emerged as an attractive candidate as Madrid evaluate the goalkeeping market. The Portugal international is highly regarded within the club and has reportedly received strong recommendations from new goalkeeping coach Nuno Santos. Former Madrid and Porto manager Jose Mourinho has also been associated with the clubs interest in Costa, further strengthening the perception that the 26-year-old could be a suitable option for the future.

Costa has already established himself as Portugal first-choice goalkeeper and has accumulated close to 50 international appearances at a relatively young age. His experience at the highest level, combined with his age and continued development, makes him an appealing long-term investment for Madrid. However, Porto are unlikely to let their prized goalkeeper leave cheaply, with his estimated market value standing at around €40 million.

Madrid are also considering alternatives from within their own system, with Javi Navarro reportedly attracting attention after his performances in the lower divisions. Promoting a goalkeeper from the academy could provide a more economical solution while maintaining the clubs tradition of developing young talent. Nevertheless, Costa would offer a proven option with significant international and European experience if Madrid decide they need a more established successor to Courtois.

For now, there is no immediate need for Madrid to make a major move, as the expectation remains that Courtois could agree to a new contract. Costa is therefore being viewed more as a strategic option for the future rather than an urgent signing. If Courtois eventually departs, however, the Porto goalkeeper could become one of the leading candidates to take over between the posts at the Santiago Bernabeu.
