England Hit by Major Injury Blow as Five Key Players Withdraw from Squad
England manager Thomas Tuchel has been handed a significant setback ahead of the UEFA Nations League fixtures, with five senior players forced to withdraw from the squad because of injuries. Tino Livramento, Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, and Declan Rice were all removed from the squad following consultations between the national team and their respective clubs.
Tuchel has responded by calling up Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Everton midfielder James Garner to strengthen his options. Both players missed England’s 2026 World Cup squad but are now expected to join the national team for training, with Gibbs-White having previously been close to receiving a place in the original selection.
Palmer’s withdrawal is particularly notable after the 24-year-old Chelsea forward had earned another opportunity with the national team. He has made an impressive contribution for Chelsea this season with four goals and two assists, but a minor injury suffered after playing the full match against Brentford has forced him to step aside during the international break.
The absence of Rice, Rashford, and Mainoo further reduces Tuchel’s experienced options in midfield and attack. Rice has faced a heavy workload with Arsenal, while Rashford and Mainoo both picked up physical problems during Manchester United’s latest draw against Fulham, adding to the manager’s selection problems.
Livramento’s knee injury also leaves England with fewer alternatives in defence after the Newcastle United player had already seen limited playing time this season. The growing injury list will test the depth of Tuchel’s squad during a demanding international schedule, which includes a home meeting with world champions Spain at Wembley followed by away fixtures against the Czech Republic and Croatia, before another home clash with the Czech Republic.
