Calafiori's Arsenal Transfer Stalled by Bologna-Basel Dispute

The transfer of Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal has hit a snag due to a disagreement between Bologna and FC Basel over a sell-on clause. Arsenal, aiming to strengthen their squad to challenge for the Premier League title, had identified Calafiori as a key target. The club has reportedly agreed to personal terms with the Italian defender and settled on a fee with Bologna—an initial £33.5 million plus £4.5 million in add-ons.
However, the deal has been delayed because Basel, Calafiori's former club, is demanding 50% of the transfer fee based on a sell-on clause from when they sold him to Bologna. Bologna, feeling the clause is unfair given Calafiori's brief stint at Basel, is seeking to renegotiate the terms. As a result, the clubs have not communicated for five days, complicating the transfer process.
Calafiori is set to join Bologna's pre-season training, while Arsenal hopes to finalize the deal before their American tour on July 21st. This dispute underscores the complexities of modern football transfers, where sell-on clauses can significantly impact negotiations.
