Marseille Sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United in £26.6m Deal

Marseille have completed the signing of forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United in a deal worth up to €31.6 million (£26.6 million). The 22-year-old, who was a product of United's academy, has agreed to a contract that will keep him with the French club until 2029.
Greenwood has not played for Manchester United since January 2022. He spent the previous season on loan at Getafe in La Liga, where he revived his career by scoring 10 goals and providing six assists in 36 appearances, earning the title of Getafe's player of the season.

The transfer comes after serious charges against Greenwood, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023. Despite the legal resolution, his move to Marseille faced criticism, notably from the Marseille mayor, when the club's intention to sign him became public.
Greenwood made his senior debut for Manchester United in 2019 during a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain. Over his tenure at United, he scored 35 goals in 129 appearances and earned his only England cap in 2020. Following an internal investigation into his conduct, Manchester United announced in August 2023 that Greenwood would leave the club by mutual agreement.
Manchester United has wished Greenwood well in his new chapter and included a significant sell-on clause in the transfer deal with Marseille. Greenwood's first game back in England since his arrest in January 2022 could be during Marseille's pre-season friendly against Sunderland on August 3rd, set to take place at Bradford City's Valley Parade due to renovation work at the Stadium of Light. Coincidentally, Greenwood was born in Bradford, adding a layer of personal significance to the match.
