Marta's Emotional Exit After Red Card in Olympic Clash

Brazilian football legend Marta left the pitch in tears after receiving a straight red card during Brazil's 2-0 loss to Spain in the Olympic women's football tournament. The incident occurred in a Group C match in Bordeaux, where Marta's high-footed tackle narrowly missed Spain's Olga Carmona, resulting in her ejection just before halftime.

This red card casts uncertainty on Marta's chances of continuing in the tournament, as Brazil's progression now hinges on their performance in the upcoming quarter-final against hosts France. Brazil advanced as one of the best third-placed teams.
Despite being level at halftime, Brazil conceded two goals in the second half, with Spain scoring in the 68th minute and again in the 17th minute of injury time, maintaining their perfect group stage record.

Marta, aged 38, who announced her intention to retire from international football this year, is the all-time leading scorer in World Cups with 17 goals in 23 appearances across six tournaments. She previously won Olympic silver medals in 2004 and 2008, losing to the United States on both occasions.
In other results, the United States continued their strong form with a 2-1 victory over Australia, securing the top spot in Group B and setting up a quarter-final clash with Japan. Canada also advanced to the knockout stage despite a six-point deduction, with a 1-0 win over Colombia.
