France's Victory Over Argentina Marred by On-Field Clashes

In a heated Olympic men's football quarter-final, France edged out Argentina 1-0, setting up a semi-final clash with Egypt. The match, held at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, ended in chaos as players and coaches from both sides clashed on the pitch.

Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the decisive goal, heading in Michael Olise's corner in the fifth minute. Despite Argentina's best chance coming from Giuliano Simeone's close-range header just before half-time, they failed to find the net. France had a late goal ruled out by VAR due to a foul by Maghnes Akliouche.

The tension between the teams was palpable, exacerbated by recent incidents, including Argentina's derogatory chants about France's black players after winning the Copa America. The hostility continued as French fans booed the Argentine national anthem.

France, aiming for their first Olympic gold in men's football since 1984, will face Egypt after the Pharaohs defeated Paraguay on penalties. Argentina, who had hoped to replicate Italy's 1936 feat of holding both the World Cup and Olympic titles, were left disappointed.
In other Olympic football news, Spain defeated Japan 3-0, thanks to Fermin Lopez's brace and Abel Ruiz's late goal, setting up a semi-final with Morocco. Morocco impressed with a 4-0 win over the United States, marking their first-ever semi-final appearance in the competition.
The Olympic football tournament continues to captivate with its high stakes and intense rivalries, promising more thrilling matches ahead.
