Controversial Penalty Sinks Arsenal in San Siro Struggle

Arsenal suffered their second consecutive defeat as Inter Milan secured a narrow 1-0 victory at the San Siro, with Hakan Calhanoglu's contentious first-half penalty proving decisive in this Champions League encounter. The Gunners, already missing key midfielder Declan Rice through injury, struggled to create clear-cut chances despite dominating possession and attempting a remarkable 46 crosses throughout the match.

The game's defining moment came just before halftime when Mikel Merino was penalized for handball following Mehdi Taremi's flick. The decision appeared harsh, with Merino having little opportunity to move his arm away from the ball. Earlier in the half, Arsenal had their own penalty shout when Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer appeared to make contact with Merino's head while punching clear a Gabriel Martinelli cross, but VAR declined to intervene, much to manager Mikel Arteta's frustration.

Despite introducing captain Martin Odegaard in stoppage time after his 12-game absence through injury, Arsenal couldn't find an equalizer. Their best opportunities fell to William Saliba, who missed a promising header, and Kai Havertz, who was denied by an excellent intervention from Inter defender Yann Bisseck. The result sees Arsenal drop to 12th in the Champions League standings, while Inter maintain their unbeaten start to the competition, moving up to fifth place with 10 points from four matches. Arteta defended his team's performance, claiming it was their "best big-game performance in Europe" despite the disappointing outcome.
