FIFA Observes Ongoing Overhaul of Indonesia’s Liga 1
The transformation of Indonesia’s top-tier football league, Liga 1, has drawn the attention of FIFA, with the organization’s Director, Theodore Giannikos, personally assessing its development during a visit to Jakarta. His presence reflects FIFA’s interest in the league’s progress as it undergoes structural and professional improvements.
During his stay, Giannikos attended the high-profile match between Persija and Persebaya at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, gaining a firsthand look at the league's current state. His visit also included comparative observations of football leagues across Southeast Asia, suggesting a broader evaluation of the region's footballing standards.
PSSI, under the leadership of Chairman Erick Thohir, has been vocal about its mission to elevate Liga 1 to become one of the most competitive and professionally run leagues in Southeast Asia and beyond. Part of this ongoing reform includes a strong push to eliminate unprofessional practices such as match manipulation.
Efforts to improve the quality of refereeing have also been prioritized, with training programs being aligned with AFC and FIFA standards. Additionally, the use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology has been implemented across matches to ensure fair play and transparency.
PSSI is further encouraging clubs to meet proper licensing requirements while expanding opportunities for sponsorship, aiming to boost the financial and operational strength of both the league and its teams. These combined efforts are intended to set a new benchmark for Indonesian football and establish Liga 1 as a model of progress and professionalism in the region.
