Bruno Fernandes Benched for First Time in Over Two Years as Manchester United Lose to Wolves

Bruno Fernandes was notably benched for the first time in over two years during Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Sunday. The Portugal midfielder, who had been instrumental in United’s dramatic 5-4 extra-time win over Lyon just days earlier, started the match on the bench due to fatigue. Although he was introduced in the second half, his presence wasn’t enough to prevent United from suffering their 15th Premier League defeat of the season.
Despite being one of United's key players, Fernandes' absence from the starting lineup was part of a broader strategy by manager Ruben Amorim, who sought to give younger players opportunities. Amorim handed senior debuts to 20-year-old Tyler Fredricson and 18-year-old Harry Amass, while also bringing 17-year-old Chido Obi-Martin onto the field. The manager acknowledged that it wasn’t an ideal time to rely on youth but stressed the need to give them experience amid United’s ongoing struggles.
With little left to play for in the Premier League, as United sits comfortably in mid-table, Amorim focused on developing his younger players, despite the challenging circumstances. The team’s primary goal now is to continue rebuilding and looking ahead to the future, with Amorim openly admitting that the situation wasn't perfect for integrating youth but emphasized it was necessary for long-term growth.
