Xabi Alonso’s Potential Exit from Bayer Leverkusen: A ‘Gentleman’s Agreement’ in Place
Bayer Leverkusen’s CEO, Fernando Carro, has confirmed that the club has a "gentleman's agreement" with head coach Xabi Alonso, which would allow him to leave if a club he previously played for, such as Real Madrid or Liverpool, expresses interest in hiring him. This agreement gives Alonso the flexibility to pursue opportunities at these iconic clubs, should they seek a new manager, with speculation surrounding his future rising due to Real Madrid’s struggles this season.
Alonso, who has been with Leverkusen since October 2022, has transformed the team, guiding them to significant achievements, including an unbeaten Bundesliga season and a DFB-Pokal victory. While he was linked to the Liverpool job earlier in 2024, Alonso chose to stay with Leverkusen. With his contract running until 2026, the club remains hopeful that he will continue his successful tenure, but they are preparing for the possibility of his departure.
Carro expressed the club’s desire for Alonso to stay beyond his current contract, but emphasized that discussions regarding his future would need to be held within a few weeks. He highlighted Alonso’s respect for the club and the open communication they share, but ultimately, the decision lies with Alonso, and the club is prepared for any eventuality regarding his future.
