Calvin Verdonk: Premier League Not an Option for My Career
As the European football season nears its end, transfer rumors continue to swirl, including speculation surrounding Indonesian national team defender Calvin Verdonk. While he admits the possibility of leaving NEC Nijmegen, Verdonk has made it clear that a move to England or Portugal is not in his future plans. Despite being linked with Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven during the winter transfer window, Verdonk remains under contract with NEC until 2028 and is not in a hurry to leave. However, he does express interest in exploring opportunities outside of the Netherlands.
Verdonk shared that while financial considerations are important to him, his age as a footballer also plays a role in his decisions. Although he is open to testing himself in one of Europe’s top five leagues, he does not feel suited for the Premier League, citing its fast pace and physical demands. Instead, he sees potential in the Bundesliga and La Liga, where the playing styles might suit him better. Verdonk also mentioned his unfamiliarity with Serie A but believes some of his teammates could perform well in Italy.
Reflecting on his past experience in Portugal, Verdonk admitted that his time at Famalicao between 2020 and 2022 was difficult, partly due to language barriers and the challenges of adapting to life abroad. He emphasized that feeling comfortable off the pitch is crucial for success on it, which is why he feels at home in the Netherlands, contributing positively to his performances.
