FIFA Sanctions Hit PSSI: Reduced Crowd Support Could Hurt Indonesia Against China
Indonesia's football federation, PSSI, has been hit with two sanctions from FIFA following fan misconduct during the World Cup qualifier match against Bahrain on March 25, 2025, at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. The penalties include a monetary fine of approximately IDR 400 million and a restriction on spectator attendance for Indonesia’s next home match in the qualifiers.

The second sanction could have a significant impact, as it involves the closure of 15 percent of the stadium’s seating capacity—specifically the north and south tribunes, where discriminatory chants were reported. According to FIFA’s findings, around 200 supporters directed xenophobic slogans at the visiting Bahraini team, leading to the disciplinary measures. This behavior prompted FIFA to demand a revised seating plan from PSSI at least ten days before the next match.

The enforcement of these sanctions comes at a critical moment, with Indonesia set to face China on June 5, 2025. The reduced fan presence in key sections of the stadium may diminish the home advantage, potentially affecting team morale and performance. As a result, the national team could find themselves at a disadvantage in this important qualifying fixture.
