The award system remains the same, with journalists from the top 100 FIFA-ranked countries casting votes to determine the winner in the men's category, while the women's category will be based on the top 50 FIFA-ranked nations.
A major twist in the 2025 edition is that the reigning Ballon d'Or winner, Rodri, will not be able to defend his title due to an ACL injury that has sidelined him for the season. This opens the door for a new winner, with speculation growing over who might take the trophy.
