Elkan Baggott's Absence from the National Team: A Long Pause for a Key Defender

Elkan Baggott has not featured for the Indonesian national team since January 28, 2024, when he last wore the Garuda jersey. Despite speculation that he might return for the final two matches of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against China and Japan, his name was ultimately left out of the squad. The 22-year-old center-back, who spent the 2024/2025 season on loan at Blackpool FC from Ipswich Town, was instead seen vacationing in Bali during this international window.
Baggott made his debut for Indonesia in 2021 and quickly established himself as a core part of the team's defense. He played a pivotal role in campaigns such as the 2020 AFF Championship and was instrumental in securing Indonesia’s qualification for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. However, the AFC tournament also marked his most recent appearance for the national team, where he played a full match in the Round of 16 loss to Australia — a game marred by his unfortunate own goal.
In total, Baggott has earned 23 caps and scored two goals for Indonesia, both in important victories. He was previously regarded as an ideal defensive partner to players like Rizky Ridho and Jordi Amat before the arrival of Jay Idzes changed the dynamics in the backline. While his absence now raises questions about his future with the team, his past contributions continue to stand out in the national team’s recent journey.
