New AFF 2026 Schedule Boosts Indonesia’s Chances to Field Strongest Squad

The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) has confirmed the competition schedule for its upcoming events in 2025 and 2026, including the highly anticipated ASEAN Championship 2026. Unlike previous editions held at the end of the year, the next tournament will run from July 25 to August 26, 2026. The host nation has yet to be announced, but the timing alone has sparked optimism, especially for teams like Indonesia.
The revised schedule offers a significant advantage for the Indonesian national team. In the 2024 edition, the squad was primarily composed of U-23 players due to clashes with European club schedules. With the 2026 edition now falling during the off-season for most European and Asian leagues, top Indonesian players based abroad could be available for selection, increasing the team’s potential to compete with a full-strength lineup.
However, the decision to deploy the senior team will likely depend on Indonesia’s status in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which ends just days before the ASEAN tournament begins. If the national team qualifies for the World Cup, the focus may remain on recovery or shifting attention to younger players. Meanwhile, the AFF also announced other events, including the Women’s Championship in Vietnam in August 2025 and the U-23 Championship in Indonesia in July 2025, showing a packed and strategic regional football calendar.
