Persebaya Surabaya vs PSIM Yogyakarta to Kick Off Liga 1 2025-26 Season

The opening match of the Liga 1 2025-26 season, now rebranded as the Super League, will feature Persebaya Surabaya facing PSIM Yogyakarta on August 8, 2025. This announcement came directly from PT Liga Indonesia Baru’s CEO, Ferry Paulus, following a shareholders meeting. The decision marks a shift from earlier expectations that the season would begin with a clash between last season’s Liga 1 and Liga 2 champions.
Initially, the first game was planned to be Persib Bandung versus PSIM Yogyakarta, highlighting a duel between the reigning champions of both divisions. However, this plan was changed, confirmed by Ferry after images circulated on social media showing Persebaya and PSIM set to open the season at Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium.
Ferry explained that the league does not follow a tradition requiring the opening match to feature the previous champions from Liga 1 and Liga 2. Instead, the league prioritizes matches that promise strong commercial appeal, exciting performances, and large supporter turnout, aiming to maximize the season’s impact from the start.
The choice to have Persebaya and PSIM as the season’s first fixture reflects this commercial strategy rather than any exclusion of clubs. The league’s management emphasizes flexibility in scheduling to create engaging matchups that benefit the competition’s overall appeal.
