Santi Cazorla Extends Real Oviedo Stay at 40, Set to Lead in La Liga Return
Santi Cazorla has signed a one-year contract extension with Real Oviedo at the age of 40, defying age expectations to continue competing at the top level. The former Arsenal midfielder rejoined his boyhood club in 2023 and played a key role in their remarkable promotion to La Liga, ending a 24-year absence from Spain’s top division.
During the previous season, Cazorla featured in 35 matches, contributing five goals and five assists. His most crucial performances came during the promotion play-offs, where he scored a decisive free-kick against Almeria in the semifinals and followed it up with a penalty in extra time against CD Mirandes in the final, securing Oviedo's place in La Liga.
The club praised Cazorla's leadership and legacy, highlighting his deep connection to Real Oviedo and the inspiration he brings both on and off the pitch. His return and continued presence are viewed as symbolic of resilience and loyalty, especially considering the challenges he overcame to resume his career after a near career-ending Achilles injury.
