Barcelona Delay Frenkie de Jong Contract Renewal Amid Legal and Financial Issues

Barcelona has prioritized securing a new deal for Frenkie de Jong, whose current contract expires at the end of the season. The midfielder, also serving as one of the club’s captains, has repeatedly expressed his desire to stay, and both sides are eager to reach an agreement.
Talks, however, have been delayed due to complications with De Jong’s former agent, Ali Dursun. The club requested clarity on his new representation before proceeding, with Sebastien Ledure now confirmed as his agent after meeting with sporting director Deco in late August.
Another obstacle lies in outstanding payments still owed to De Jong, which need to be restructured within the new contract to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. This financial adjustment, combined with the recent change in negotiators, has slowed down progress despite mutual commitment.
De Jong remains central to Barcelona’s plans under Hansi Flick and has made it clear he wants to extend his stay until 2029. Once the pending salary issues are resolved, his long-term continuity at the club is expected to be finalized.
