Injury Ends Samuel Umtiti’s Career as Former France and Barcelona Defender Retires

Samuel Umtiti, once a key defender for France and Barcelona, has decided to end his professional football career after struggling with a persistent knee injury. Without a club since leaving Lille in the summer, he had been unable to recover fully and spent much of his recent years sidelined, including missing the entire previous season following a second knee surgery in February 2024.
The 31-year-old began his career at Lyon, making 170 appearances and scoring five goals before moving to Barcelona in 2017. He quickly established himself as a central figure in the team’s defense but saw his progress derailed by a serious ligament injury in 2018. His decision to undergo therapy rather than immediate surgery allowed him to feature for France at the 2018 World Cup, where he played a pivotal role in their title-winning campaign.
Despite his early success, Umtiti’s time at Barcelona dwindled after recurring injuries limited his contributions. He made 133 appearances and scored twice for the club before eventually moving on, including a loan spell at Lecce in 2022 and a short stint at Lille. His international career included 31 caps and four goals, highlighted by crucial performances during France’s run to World Cup glory.
Umtiti becomes the fifth member of France’s 2018 World Cup-winning squad to retire, joining Blaise Matuidi, Adil Rami, Raphaël Varane, and Steve Mandanda. His journey reflects both the heights of international triumph and the challenges of chronic injury, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and decisive contributions on football’s biggest stage.
