Indonesian Goalkeeping Battle: Audero Rising, Paes Fading?

The spotlight on Indonesian national team goalkeepers is intensifying as Emil Audero demonstrates outstanding form in Italy, raising his profile as a leading candidate for the Garuda’s starting spot. His recent performances at club level have showcased reliability and consistency, which have not gone unnoticed by the national team coach Patrick Kluivert, who is closely monitoring all goalkeepers ahead of the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers. Audero’s strong showings since his national debut in July 2025 have made him a focal point in Indonesia’s squad.
Meanwhile, Maarten Paes has struggled with injury setbacks, keeping him out of FC Dallas’ last five MLS matches. The Dutch-born goalkeeper has not yet fully recovered from a hamstring injury, which diminishes his chances of participating in upcoming national team fixtures against Saudi Arabia and Iraq. As a result, his position as a first-choice goalkeeper for Indonesia appears increasingly uncertain, leaving room for others to step into the spotlight.
Domestically, other goalkeepers have impressed and remain in contention for national team call-ups. Nadeo Argawinata, serving as captain for Borneo FC, has been a standout performer, conceding only two goals across four league matches and keeping two clean sheets. His 15 saves have contributed significantly to Borneo FC’s position at the top of the league table. Ernando Ari Sutaryadi of Persebaya Surabaya has also performed well, accumulating 17 saves and maintaining solid defensive records, highlighting the depth of talent available for the national team.
Audero’s recent achievements in Serie A further underline his rise. He helped Cremonese secure a goalless draw against Hellas Verona, making nine crucial saves and earning a spot in the Best XI of Week 3. Despite conceding three goals in the early season, his team remains undefeated and sits third in the standings, reflecting both his personal impact and the team’s collective resilience. His performances position him as the most reliable option for Indonesia as the team prepares for key international fixtures.
