Mees Hilgers’ Future in Doubt: Struggling for Club Stability and Impact in Indonesia’s Squad

Mees Hilgers, once seen as a key defensive figure for the Indonesian national team, is gradually fading from the spotlight amid rising competition within the squad. With several defenders performing strongly, his chances of regaining a regular starting role have diminished, raising questions about his role in the team ahead of the crucial fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers. Indonesia faces challenging matches against Saudi Arabia and Iraq, making squad depth more important than ever.
Hilgers missed recent FIFA matchday fixtures in Surabaya, not due to injury but to focus on a potential club transfer. However, after several weeks into the 2025/2026 Eredivisie season, he has yet to secure a new team. Reports from Dutch media indicate that discussions with his current club, Twente, are ongoing, with the club aiming to extend his contract rather than let him leave on a free transfer. As a result, he remains part of Twente’s squad at least until mid-season.
Since his promotion to Twente’s senior team in 2020, Hilgers has made a significant impact with over a hundred appearances and three goals, establishing himself as a reliable defensive presence despite occasional injuries. Previously recognized as a promising talent in the Netherlands, he even earned call-ups to the Netherlands U-21 team but did not progress to the senior level due to stiff competition. His naturalization as an Indonesian citizen in 2024 opened a new chapter, offering him the chance to feature for the Garuda, though injuries and inconsistent form have limited his contributions.
Comparisons with other defenders suggest that Hilgers is no longer indispensable for Indonesia. Players like Jay Idzes, Justin Hubner, Calvin Verdonk, and local talent Rizky Ridho provide strong alternatives, ensuring the team’s defense remains solid in his absence. With his club situation unresolved, it remains uncertain whether Hilgers will return to feature prominently for the national team in the upcoming qualifiers, leaving fans and coaches to watch closely.
