Mourinho Returns Home: Signs Two-Year Deal to Lead Benfica

Jose Mourinho has officially returned to Portuguese football as Benfica’s new head coach, signing a two-year contract shortly after being dismissed by Fenerbahce. The deal includes a clause allowing either party to opt out after the 2025-26 season under the same conditions.
Mourinho replaces Bruno Lage, who was sacked following Benfica’s 3-2 home defeat to Qarabag in the Champions League opener. His appointment marks a significant moment as Benfica was the club that gave him his first senior managerial role in 2000, before his rise to prominence with FC Porto.
The 62-year-old expressed strong emotions upon his return, highlighting his desire to coach in his home country while still at the peak of his career. He arrived at Benfica’s training ground in his black Ferrari, symbolizing his long-awaited return to Portuguese football after 21 years abroad.
Mourinho emphasized that, despite a 25-year career managing some of the world’s biggest clubs, nothing motivates him more than leading Benfica. He pledged full dedication to the club, focusing on the mission and the joy of coaching rather than the challenges ahead.
