FIFA October Rankings: Indonesia Slides as Malaysia and Thailand Surge Ahead

The latest FIFA World Rankings for October 2025 delivered disappointing news for Indonesian football, as the national team dropped three spots to 122nd in the world. Consecutive defeats in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against Saudi Arabia and Iraq significantly affected their points total, leaving Indonesia behind regional competitors like North Korea and Sierra Leone. This decline has raised concerns about Indonesia’s current trajectory on the international stage.
In stark contrast, Southeast Asian rivals showed notable progress. Malaysia climbed five positions to 118th after back-to-back convincing victories over Laos in the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers. Thailand also enjoyed a strong rise, moving up to 96th with consistent performances that reinforce their status as one of the region’s leading football forces. Vietnam followed closely at 113th, maintaining competitive form within Asia.
Beyond ASEAN, Asian football’s hierarchy remained firmly led by Japan, who held 19th after a historic victory over Brazil in an international friendly. Iran, South Korea, Australia, and Qatar completed the continent’s top five, underlining their dominance in global competition. Meanwhile, Syria emerged as a surprise mover, jumping to 86th after securing two crucial wins over Myanmar in qualification matches.
For Indonesia, the latest rankings underline a pressing need for recovery and strategic improvement. While regional rivals continue to build momentum and climb the global ladder, the Garuda must regain form to avoid falling further behind in the ASEAN and Asian landscape. The gap is widening, and the challenge is now greater than ever.
