Argentina’s Kochi Friendly Canceled as Messi’s Squad Alters November Plans

Argentina’s Kochi Friendly Canceled as Messi’s Squad Alters November Plans
Argentina’s much-anticipated friendly match in Kochi has officially been called off, leaving Indian football fans disappointed. The reigning world champions, led by Lionel Messi, were originally scheduled to play in Kerala on November 17. However, the Argentine Football Association revised their plans, confirming that the team will now only play one international fixture—against Angola in Luanda on November 14—before returning to Europe to continue their training camp.

The cancellation comes after weeks of excitement surrounding Argentina’s visit to India, which was initially listed on their November itinerary. Kochi’s Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium had even undergone inspections by AFA representatives earlier this month, fueling hopes of a rare opportunity for Indian fans to witness Messi and his World Cup-winning teammates live. The news of the postponement, therefore, comes as a major setback for supporters and organizers alike.

According to Anto Augustine, the local event sponsor, the match was postponed due to delays in securing FIFA’s official approval. The decision was made in coordination with the AFA, and organizers indicated that the fixture would be rescheduled for a future international window. Despite this clarification, Kerala’s sports authorities stated they had not yet received formal confirmation, leaving the situation uncertain and fans still awaiting an official update.

While the friendly has been shelved, Indian fans will still have a chance to see Messi soon. The Argentine star is set to visit India in December 2025 for a special three-day event called *The GOAT Tour of India 2025*. The tour will take him across major cities including Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi, giving supporters another opportunity to celebrate one of football’s greatest icons.
