TMJ Reveals Shocking Details Behind Malaysia’s Naturalization Scandal

TMJ Reveals Shocking Details Behind Malaysia’s Naturalization Scandal
Tunku Ismail Idris, known as TMJ and head of Johor Darul Ta’zim, spoke out following FIFA sanctions against the Malaysian Football Federation (FAM) and seven naturalized players. During a press conference, he detailed the steps he had taken to professionalize Malaysian football, including overseeing naturalization projects and influencing key appointments such as the national team coach and FAM CEO. His involvement aimed to raise Malaysia’s competitiveness at the international level.

The naturalization program, however, ended in controversy after FIFA found that seven players—Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal, Hector Hevel, Facundo Garces, and Gabriel Palmero—had falsified documents regarding their Malaysian ancestry. The federation had reported that their grandparents were born in Malaysia, which FIFA later disproved, triggering fines and suspensions. The scandal highlighted the risks of accelerating talent acquisition without thorough verification.

TMJ disclosed that before the scandal, 27 players had been proposed by various agents for naturalization, with only seven meeting the official requirements set by Malaysia’s National Registration Department. While he did not personally manage the selection process, he acknowledged the involvement of other influential figures in presenting candidates. TMJ emphasized that the final approvals were based on official government checks, and the rest of the proposed players were not eligible.

Despite the controversy, TMJ confirmed that Malaysia would continue seeking talent both locally and abroad to strengthen the national team. He framed the initiative as a standard effort to enhance performance and competitiveness, noting that the sanctioned players had briefly participated in significant matches before the falsifications were uncovered. The FIFA ruling included fines for FAM and one-year bans for the seven players, underlining the seriousness of administrative and procedural compliance in international football.
