NEC Nijmegen Eyes Mees Hilgers, But FC Twente Holds Firm

Dutch club NEC Nijmegen has expressed strong interest in acquiring Indonesian international Mees Hilgers from FC Twente. The club’s technical director sees Hilgers as a perfect fit for their defensive setup, particularly as a right-sided center back in a three-man defense. NEC approached Twente to explore possibilities, but the Dutch club has made its stance clear regarding Hilgers’ future.
FC Twente is determined not to let Hilgers leave without a contract extension. The club intends to secure a new deal first before entertaining any transfer, ensuring that any potential move would involve a significant fee that NEC cannot meet. Twente has also refused to consider a loan arrangement for the player.
Hilgers’ contract is set to expire in June 2026, and despite proposals for renewal, the player has remained unresponsive. His lack of communication has created a deadlock between the player and the club, leaving his future uncertain. Meanwhile, Hilgers has yet to make an appearance this season, reflecting the growing tension between him and Twente.
The strained relationship traces back to the preseason, when Hilgers’ potential transfer fell through. In response, Twente decided not to field him to avoid losing him on a free transfer next year. This approach has drawn criticism from both the players’ association and football journalists, highlighting the controversy surrounding the situation.
