Johor Darul Ta’zim Tops Southeast Asia, Persib Still Outside Top 100 in Asia

Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) has been recognized as the leading football club in Southeast Asia according to the latest Opta Power Rankings. The Malaysian side has dominated domestically, winning the Malaysia Super League for 11 consecutive seasons, and has consistently participated in the AFC Champions League, reaching the Round of 16 in 2022 and 2024-25. They also remain the only Southeast Asian team to have won the AFC Cup, achieving the feat in 2015.
Opta’s rankings place JDT at the top of Southeast Asia, with their global position around 214th and seventh in Asia, although their latest update slightly dropped them to ninth in the continent. This ranking reflects the club’s strong regional performance and sustained presence in international competitions, highlighting their dominance compared to other Southeast Asian teams.
In contrast, Indonesian clubs lag behind in the continental standings. Persib Bandung leads Indonesian teams but ranks only 115th in Asia, just above Singapore’s Lion City Sailors. Limited participation in AFC competitions over the past seasons has prevented Persib from breaking into the top tier of Southeast Asian football according to Opta’s evaluation.
Other Southeast Asian clubs in the top 100 include Buriram United, Bangkok United, and Cong An Ha Noi. Persib’s ranking suggests room for growth, and with stronger performances in upcoming AFC competitions, they have the potential to climb higher, strengthening Indonesia’s presence on the Asian football stage.
