Why Indonesia U-17 Secures Direct Entry to the 2026 AFC U-17 Asian Cup

Indonesia's U-17 national team has earned a direct spot in the 2026 AFC U-17 Asian Cup, bypassing the usual qualification rounds. The tournament is set to take place in Saudi Arabia from May 7 to 24, 2026, featuring a total of sixteen teams competing for the title.
Unlike the usual process, only seven teams will emerge from the qualification stage, each representing a group winner. The remaining nine spots have already been claimed by countries that reached the quarterfinals of the previous U-17 Asian Cup in 2025 or are hosting the upcoming U-17 World Cup.
The nine pre-qualified nations include Indonesia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and Tajikistan. This approach rewards teams that have demonstrated strong performance in the prior continental and world competitions, ensuring a high level of competition for the 2026 tournament.
Indonesia has participated in the U-17 Asian Cup seven times since their debut in 1986, with their best performance reaching fourth place in the 1990 edition. The direct qualification highlights the growing strength of Indonesia's youth program and offers the team an opportunity to further build on its international experience.
