Following the conclusion of the group stage in the European World Cup qualifiers, the 16 teams advancing to the play-offs have been officially seeded based on their FIFA ranking. These teams will be drawn into four separate knockout pathways, with the winner of each single-elimination pathway securing a place in the 2026 World Cup finals.

The draw structure is based on four distinct pots. The four teams in Pot 1 will have the advantage of hosting the four teams from Pot 4 in the semi-finals of their respective pathways.
The highest-ranked teams, forming
Pot 1: Italy, Denmark, Turkey, and Ukraine.
Pot 2: Poland, Wales, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.
Pot 3: Republic of Ireland, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo.
Pot 4: Sweden, Romania, North Macedonia, and Northern Ireland.
With strong teams like Italy and Denmark leading the top pot and former contenders like Sweden relegated to Pot 4, the structure sets the stage for highly challenging and dramatic knockout fixtures.
