SEA Games 2025 Football Groups Shift After Cambodia’s Exit, Indonesia U-22 Faces Narrower Field

The football group allocations for the 2025 SEA Games experienced a late adjustment after Cambodia U-22 withdrew from the competition. Despite the change, Indonesia U-22 retained its position in Group C. The initial draw, conducted in October, organized ten national teams into three groups, with two groups containing three nations and one group featuring four.
Cambodia had originally been placed in Group A alongside Thailand U-22 and Timor Leste U-22, while Group B consisted of Vietnam U-22, Malaysia U-22, and Laos U-22. Group C was initially the only four-team group, containing Indonesia U-22, the Philippines U-22, Myanmar U-22, and Singapore U-22. Cambodia’s withdrawal forced a reconfiguration of these lineups.
The organizing committee confirmed that the football tournament’s structure would proceed without a new draw. To maintain balance among the groups, Singapore was moved from Group C to Group A, joining Thailand and Timor Leste. This shift ensured that each group retained an appropriate number of participating teams.
The adjustment ultimately brought a slight advantage for Indonesia U-22, as the team now faces only two opponents in the group stage instead of three. Under the guidance of coach Indra Sjafri, Indonesia is scheduled to play the Philippines U-22 on 8 December 2025 and Myanmar U-22 on 12 December 2025, with a clearer path toward advancing from the group phase.
