Liverpool Legend Steve Nicol: Salah Must Remain a Substitute, Team Performs Better Without Him

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol, speaking on ESPN, strongly argued that manager Arne Slot should keep Mohamed Salah on the bench for the upcoming match against Sunderland, insisting that the team’s current structure is superior without the Egyptian star.
Nicol stated emphatically that Salah must remain a substitute, arguing that Liverpool unequivocally performs better when he is not in the starting eleven. He stressed that the Reds need to prioritize a solid defense and avoid conceding goals, as the team cannot rely on scoring three or four times every week to win matches.
He warned that reintroducing Salah into the starting lineup would disrupt the current tactical system, which he believes has brought defensive solidity, particularly crediting Dominik Szoboszlai. Nicol praised Szoboszlai for being actively involved in both attack and defense, unlike Salah, who he claims tends to "stand still on the wing waiting for the ball."
Nicol concluded that Liverpool's overall defensive shape is vastly improved. Changing the line-up for the Sunderland match to accommodate Salah would be a "major mistake," as the team must protect this newfound stable foundation and system, which saw them secure a disciplined win against West Ham United.
