Visa Standoff Pushes Iran Toward Boycotting the 2026 World Cup Draw in the U.S.

Visa Standoff Pushes Iran Toward Boycotting the 2026 World Cup Draw in the U.S.
Iran has announced the possibility of skipping the 2026 World Cup draw in the United States due to visa complications affecting their delegation. Reports indicate that only four visas were approved, and the president of Iran’s football federation, Mehdi Taj, was not among those granted entry. He has raised the issue directly with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, as the draw is scheduled to take place in Washington, DC.

Taj has stated that the federation is reassessing its options while coordinating with Iran’s foreign ministry and other authorities. The federation’s current stance is that no representatives will attend the event unless all required visas are approved. This dispute emerges as Iran prepares for its fourth consecutive World Cup appearance and seventh overall.

The tensions stem from long-standing restrictions placed on Iranian citizens entering the United States, driven by geopolitical and security concerns. These limitations were reinforced by an executive order designed to restrict travel from several nations, with Iran included on the list. Although the policy is expected to exempt athletes and coaching staff for major sporting events, its implementation has still affected Iran’s preparations for the draw.

Taj has expressed the belief that the situation has taken on a political dimension and criticized the handling of Iran’s visa applications. He has urged FIFA to respond firmly to what he described as a politicized process. For now, Iran’s participation in the draw remains uncertain as discussions continue.
