Manchester United Considering a 2026 Departure for Manuel Ugarte Amid Ongoing Struggles
Manuel Ugarte’s time at Manchester United appears to be heading toward an early conclusion as the club reportedly evaluates the possibility of moving him on in 2026. Despite arriving from PSG in 2024 with considerable expectations and a significant price tag, his impact has yet to match the investment. His second season has been marked by reduced playing time, raising questions about his long-term role at the club.

Reports indicate that manager Ruben Amorim is at the center of this decision. Having previously worked with Ugarte at Sporting Lisbon, Amorim is believed to be disappointed with the midfielder’s current form, noting a noticeable decline compared to their earlier years together. This perceived downturn has made it difficult for Ugarte to secure a consistent place in the lineup.

Ugarte’s performances throughout the current campaign have not shown the improvement needed to regain the manager’s trust. With his role increasingly limited, the coaching staff sees little benefit in retaining a player who is unlikely to feature prominently. The shift suggests that the club is preparing for a midfield reshuffle as part of its plans for the future.

Part of the reasoning behind a potential sale is financial strategy. Manchester United is expected to pursue several new midfield targets in 2026, many of whom carry substantial price tags. To support these ambitions, the club intends to generate additional transfer funds by offloading players who have not provided the desired contributions. Ugarte has emerged as one of the primary candidates for departure.

Though his contract runs until 2029, Manchester United is reportedly aiming to sell him for around 35–40 million euros. This valuation reflects both his remaining contract length and the club’s desire to recoup part of their investment. With form, fit, and financial factors aligning, Ugarte’s future at Old Trafford appears increasingly likely to end sooner rather than later.
