Persib Cuts Ties with Wiliam Marcilio Mid-Season After Underwhelming Impact

Persib Bandung made a decisive move by releasing Brazilian midfielder Wiliam Marcilio even before the first round of the Super League concluded. The decision became evident when the player was absent from the team’s training session ahead of their rescheduled match against Borneo FC. His early dismissal followed an earlier moment when he had been sent home before the game against Madura United due to disappointing performances during training.
Club commissioner Umuh Muchtar explained that Marcilio’s abilities did not match the standards required by Persib or the expectations of head coach Bojan Hodak. Although the midfielder still has a contract running until 2027, the club has not yet determined whether he will be loaned out or have his deal terminated. However, the possibility of an outright contract termination appears to be the most likely outcome.
Persib has already secured a replacement for Marcilio ahead of the second round of the 2025/26 Super League and the upcoming AFC Champions League Two campaign. While the identity of the new player remains undisclosed, the management believes the newcomer will provide greater impact and align more closely with the club’s competitive ambitions.
Umuh acknowledged that releasing Marcilio midway through the season reflects a broader failure in Persib’s recruitment process. He emphasized that the issue did not stem from the coaching staff, noting that Hodak has consistently shown an accurate understanding of the team’s needs and has worked responsibly to ensure the squad performs at its best.
Despite parting ways with one of their foreign signings, Persib remains confident in the unity and determination of the team. Umuh expressed hope that the club will learn from this experience and approach future player acquisitions with greater caution, while maintaining the belief that the current squad will stay cohesive and competitive moving forward.
