Southgate Vows to Keep Distance from England Squad, Will Not Attend World Cup

Former England manager Gareth Southgate discussed his separation from the national team setup, confirming he will maintain his distance and will not attend the upcoming World Cup tournament. Southgate admitted that since stepping down, his perspective has changed, noting that he has not been to any games this season and finds the team draw a "strange" event to consider watching.

When asked about which teams England should avoid in the draw, Southgate pointed to potential difficult matches against nations like Japan and Colombia, noting the strong atmosphere and large support Colombia would bring, especially playing in North America. He also joked about the decades of scrutiny that would follow a loss to Scotland from figures like Dalglish and Souness.

Regarding his post-managerial role, Southgate confirmed he watched some of the later qualifying matches under Thomas Tuchel but stressed the need to "stay away from the team." He stated definitively that he will not attend the World Cup in person, nor will he engage in media work or comment on the team during the tournament, explaining, "I have to give them space." Southgate concluded by wishing the many players and staff he worked with success, emphasizing his current role is strictly to keep his distance.
